“Jake gave me weekly lessons from when I was the age of 9 to 11. He’s great at training your ears and he teaches you how to improvise by way of learning other people’s solos. He was very patient and mindful when I was a beginner, fixing my hands if I couldn’t make the right shape for a chord, but always with constructive and encouraging words, and a joke here and there. He played blues with legends since he’s was a kid, and when I was ready, he even gave me the opportunity to sit in with a couple of my heroes. With Jake’s teaching being very diverse in genre, it gave me an appreciation for types of music I never thought I’d like, blues, swing, and country etc. Overall, he’s a really cool dude with a nice family, great guitar technique and experience, cool gear, and he is an important part of Austin’s musical legacy. “It has been a real treat to have Jake dig into my dream of playing the blues. He has gently been leading me on the path of finding my own sound. We have been working hard on finding it. Along the way, there have been many stumbling blocks (my own). What I found is that he intuitively and patiently has been coaxing me on my own time frame to transition from form/theory/thought to “finding the sound” within. He has taken me with what I started with to pacing me through learning Freddie King songs, fingering, timing, how to have fun musically, and sometimes just hearing me “download”. ” – James B.
